Technical Capabilities

3-Axis, 4-Axis & 5-Axis CNC Milling

Three axis configurations, three different cost-per-part curves. A quick spec comparison below — for the full mechanical breakdown of how each one actually works, see the process guide underneath.

3-axis CNC milling operation — linear X, Y, Z machining of prismatic components
3-AXIS 3-Axis Milling
X · Y · Z — Three Linear Axes

The cutting tool moves in three linear axes while the part stays fixed in a vice. The standard for flat, prismatic geometry at the lowest cost per part.

Tolerance±0.010 mm typical
TravelUp to 1,200 × 600 × 600 mm
Spindle12,000 – 24,000 RPM

4-axis CNC milling with rotary A-axis — indexing and continuous rotation for cylindrical features
4-AXIS 4-Axis Milling
X · Y · Z + A-Axis — Rotary Indexing or Continuous

A rotary A-axis lets the part index or continuously rotate, machining multiple faces in one setup without re-fixturing.

Tolerance±0.001mm to ±0.005mm achievable

5-AXIS SIMULTANEOUS 5-Axis Milling
X · Y · Z + B-Axis + C-Axis — Full Simultaneous

Two rotary axes let the tool approach from almost any vector, cutting undercuts and freeform surfaces in a single clamping.

Quick Decision Guide

Still not sure which axis count your part needs?

Reach for 3-Axis

Every functional feature is reachable from directly above, or from one or two indexed sides. This is the lowest cost per part and the fastest quote-to-ship time — right for brackets, plates, and enclosures at any volume.

Reach for 4-Axis

Features sit on more than one face around a shared axis and need to stay in true position relative to each other — manifolds, camshafts, D-shaft fittings. A rotary axis machines them without re-fixturing.

Reach for 5-Axis

Undercuts, compound angles, or continuously curved surfaces that no fixture flip could reach — impellers, turbine blades, implants — or any part where single-setup accuracy outweighs cycle time.

All our 5-axis machining centres are equipped with Renishaw RMP60 wireless spindle probing and Renishaw OMP60 workpiece inspection — delivering in-process dimensional verification, automatic tool length measurement, and first-part-correct accuracy on every production run.

Process Guide

How Each Axis Configuration Actually Works

The mechanics behind each process — how the part is held, how the tool approaches it, what modes are available, and where each one hits its limit.

3X

3-Axis Milling

X · Y · Z — Three Linear Axes
MechanismThe spindle moves in X, Y and Z while the part stays fixed in a vice or fixture plate. Only the tool moves.
Operating modesSingle orientation per setup. Features on a different face require unclamping, flipping the part, and re-zeroing before the next operation.
Typical setupSingle vice or fixture plate, fast changeover between parts.
Key advantageLowest cost per part. Fastest programming and shortest cycle time of the three processes.
Key limitationEach additional face machined means a manual re-fixture, which adds setup time and a small tolerance stack-up between faces.
4X

4-Axis Milling

X · Y · Z + A-Axis — Rotary Indexing or Continuous
MechanismA rotary A-axis is added around X. The part is chucked in a trunnion or indexer instead of a static vice.
Operating modesIndexing — the part rotates to a fixed angle and locks before each cut. Continuous (4.5-axis) — the A-axis rotates while the spindle cuts, used for wrapped engravings and helical features.
Typical setupRotary trunnion or indexer, part chucked once for all faces around the rotation axis.
Key advantageMultiple faces machined without unclamping — hole patterns and features on opposite sides stay in true positional relationship.
Key limitationFeatures that need an oblique or compound-angle approach still fall outside reach — that's where 5-axis becomes necessary.
5X

5-Axis Simultaneous Milling

X · Y · Z + B-Axis + C-Axis — Full Simultaneous
MechanismTwo further rotary axes (B and C) let the tool approach the part from virtually any vector. The part is clamped once.
Operating modes3+2 positioning — the rotary axes lock at a compound angle, then the machine cuts in standard 3-axis motion. Full simultaneous — all five axes move together in real time, keeping the tool tip perpendicular to a continuously curving surface.
Typical setup5-axis trunnion, single clamping for the entire part — top, sides, undercuts, and compound-angle bores.
Key advantageEliminates re-fixturing entirely, removing the single biggest source of position error on complex parts.
Key limitationHigher programming complexity and machine time — justified when geometry or tolerance genuinely requires it, not by default.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything engineers and procurement managers need to know about our multi-axis CNC machining services.

Ask a Technical Question
3-axis moves in X, Y, and Z (three linear axes). 4-axis adds a rotary A-axis table for indexing or continuous rotation. 5-axis simultaneous adds a second rotary axis (B or C), allowing the cutter to approach from virtually any vector — enabling undercuts, compound angles, and freeform organic surfaces in one setup.
No minimum order quantity at all. We accept single-piece prototypes through to 100,000+ production parts with equal proficiency. Volume discounts are available from 10 pieces upward.
We achieve ±0.001mm to ±0.005mm on stainless steel and brass, ±0.001mm to ±0.005mm on aluminium 6061 and copper, ±0.010 mm on titanium Ti-6Al-4V and tool steel, and ±0.012 mm on Inconel 718 — all significantly tighter than the ISO 2768-m general tolerance standard.
Yes — anodizing (Type II & III), electroplating, powder coating, passivation, bead blasting, black oxide, heat treating, and simple sub-assembly are all managed within our supply chain.
